No.3000/1922
(1)

THE COLONIAL SECRETARY HONG KONG TO CROWN AGENTS.
28th October 1930.
Gentlemen,
I am directed to acknowledge the receipt of
your letter No.493 M/S. A. 604 of the 25th of September,
1930, and to point out that the provisions of paragraph
3 of the schedules to the revised agreement forms
regarding half-pay on the voyage home seem to be at
variance with the suggestion contained in the Secretary
of State's despatch No.140 of the 24th May 1930, and
agreed to by this Government for the grant of a bonus of
three months salary on satisfactory completion of their
agreement to officers who are not being retained in the
service.
2.
It may be intended that this bonus shall be in
addition to half salary for the period of the voyage,
and further information on that point will be sought from
the Secretary of State; but I am to suggest that, in
any event, this very substantial improvement in the
prospects of officers joining services where such bonuses
are given, should receive some reference in the official
terms of engagement.
Gentlemen,
Your obedient Servant,
I am,
(Sgd.)
W.L. Smith.
p. Colonial Secretary.
